Sheikh Al-Qaradaghi Issues Fatwa Allowing Ramadan Fasting Exemption for Gaza Residents Amid Hardships

In a notable statement, Sheikh Ali Al-Qaradaghi, the President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, responded to a video showing a Gaza resident struggling with food and water shortages by issuing a fatwa permitting fasting exemption during Ramadan for Gaza's inhabitants due to their severe circumstances. The man in the video stated, "We need a fatwa that allows us to break our fast in Ramadan, as there is no meal for Suhoor or Iftar, and we need permission to drink water during the day because of the lack of food and water."

Al-Qaradaghi highlighted that the people of Gaza are undergoing a phase of legitimate jihad due to the occupation, pointing out that those who are unable to fast due to harsh conditions may break their fast. He added, "Because of jihad, our previous scholars mentioned that, in addition to travel and illness, there is another reason that permits breaking the fast, which is war."

He indicated that the residents of Gaza are allowed to break their fast as long as they cannot find food for Suhoor or Iftar, and those who break their fast should make it up when security and safety are restored. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has launched a devastating war on the Gaza Strip with American support, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian casualties, most of them children and women, and causing a humanitarian disaster and massive destruction of infrastructure.
