Widespread Global Mobilization in Support of Palestinian Prisoners

Mass protests erupted across several regions worldwide on Sunday to mark Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, observed annually on April 17, amid growing public outrage over violations committed by the Zionist occupation against prisoners, most notably the approval of a law allowing the implementation of the death penalty.

International Outrage

In the occupied West Bank, a mass march set off in the city of Nablus from the municipal council building toward Martyrs’ Square in the city center, with broad participation from residents as well as official and popular bodies.

Nablus Governor, Ghassan Daghlas, affirmed that the Zionist occupation continues to impose a blockade on the Palestinian people, alongside escalating violations against prisoners, pointing to the seriousness of the death penalty law passed by the Knesset.

Mass Demonstrations

On March 30, the Knesset approved the law by a majority of 62 votes in favor, 48 against, and one abstention. The law permits the execution of Palestinian prisoners accused of deliberately killing Israelis and is set to apply to around 117 detainees, with backing from right-wing parties.

Death Penalty Law

In Morocco, thousands of protesters marched in the capital, Rabat, in a solidarity demonstration that began at Bab El-Had and headed toward the parliament, raising slogans condemning violations by the Zionist occupation inside prisons and calling for the repeal of the law and support for prisoners.

In Australia, the city of Melbourne witnessed a large-scale protest, with demonstrators carrying pro-Palestinian banners and demanding international action to secure the release of prisoners and abolish the death penalty law.

Global Solidarity

Activists stated that events marking Palestinian Prisoners’ Day in Australia will continue for a week, aiming to shed light on the inhumane conditions endured by prisoners, including torture and abuses inside detention facilities.

In Tunisia, a solidarity march took place on Saturday in support of the Gaza Strip and in rejection of continued violations by the Zionist occupation of the ceasefire agreement, alongside calls for the release of Palestinian prisoners and condemnation of the death penalty law.

More than 9,600 Palestinian prisoners, including children and women, remain held in Zionist occupation prisons, where they face torture, starvation, and medical neglect, leading to the martyrdom of dozens.

Violations against prisoners have escalated in parallel with the genocide carried out by the Zionist occupation in the Gaza Strip, with U.S. support, since October 7, 2023, resulting in the fall of thousands of Palestinian martyrs.
