Amsterdam Commemorates Gaza’s Victims: Children’s Shoes and
Journalists’ Photos Reveal the Horror of Genocide
The
Dutch capital, Amsterdam, witnessed a moving event on Sunday commemorating
Palestinian children and journalists who were killed as a result of the
genocide and ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip, in a clear message condemning
crimes committed against civilians.
The
event was held in the famous Dam Square in the city center, organized by the
“Plant an Olive Tree” foundation. Photos and names of journalists killed during
the assault were displayed to highlight the violations they faced, while
thousands of children’s shoes were placed at the site as a symbol of the scale
of the tragedy.
Dutch
artists, actors, and producers participated by reading aloud the names and ages
of the child victims one by one, while volunteers distributed informational
leaflets to passersby explaining the situation in Gaza and providing details
about the humanitarian conditions.
Esther
van der Most, director of the foundation, stated that the event is being
organized for the sixteenth time in solidarity with Palestinian children, and
for the fourth time to commemorate journalists. She noted that 10,000
children’s shoes were displayed during the January 2024 event, while the number
of child victims has now risen to approximately 20,000.
She
added that this figure does not fully reflect reality, as there are children
still missing under the rubble, in Israeli prisons, or who have died due to the
weapons used.
For her
part, Dutch actress and media personality Georgina Verbaan affirmed that her
participation aimed to draw attention to the suffering of Palestinians,
especially children, saying: “I am here to convey this voice, in the hope that
it will prompt those capable of making change to take action.”
Despite
a ceasefire agreement in Gaza being in effect since October 10 of last year,
the occupying authorities have not adhered to the humanitarian protocol,
continuing to restrict the entry of food, medical aid, and fuel, thereby
worsening the humanitarian crisis.
This
comes in the aftermath of what has been described as a genocidal war that began
on October 8, 2023, with U.S. support, and has continued in various forms,
resulting in more than 72,000 deaths and over 172,000 injuries, in addition to
widespread destruction affecting around 90% of the civilian infrastructure in
the Gaza Strip.
