15 killed and 100 injured in a series of earthquakes in western Afghanistan.

October 7, 2023 - A string of powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Afghanistan on Saturday, leaving at least 15 dead and over 100 injured. These figures, according to Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, are preliminary and expected to rise, with current estimates ranging between 15 and 20 fatalities.

Mullah Janan Saik, representing the Afghan Disaster Management Authority, further emphasized concerns, noting in a recent YouTube video briefing that the regions of Herat and Badghis have suffered significant infrastructural damage. Saik added that of the known casualties, "40 individuals have been transported to local medical facilities for treatment."

Data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that the areas of Herat and Badghis experienced seismic activities measuring magnitudes of 5.5, 5.9, and 6.3, which have caused widespread alarm and prompted thousands to evacuate their homes and workplaces.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in Afghanistan, in a press release shared on its official "X" platform, reiterated concerns, mentioning that they are "receiving continuous reports of earthquake-related casualties." The organization added that their response teams are already stationed at hospitals to aid the injured and gauge further assistance needs. Notably, WHO-backed ambulances are actively transporting victims, with a significant portion being women and children.

The international community is urged to remain attentive to updates and extend support where necessary, as local communities grapple with the aftermath of this natural calamity.
