Al-Qaradaghi Confirms "Essam al-Attar: A Divine Personality Supporting Justice and Rejecting Oppression

Dr. Ali Al-Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, expressed the Islamic world's sorrow over the passing of Essam al-Attar, noted for his courageous stand in supporting justice and opposing tyranny and oppression, and his unwavering support for the Syrian people for over 60 years.

In a video statement, Al-Qaradaghi noted that al-Attar was a divine figure, a great scholar, and a distinguished thinker who served the Islamic Ummah with utter devotion.

Al-Qaradaghi praised the deceased’s long journey in serving Islam and Muslims, affirming that his legacy would remain alive and inspiring for future generations.

Al-Qaradaghi also prayed for the deceased, asking Allah to envelop him in His mercy and grant him paradise, to reunite him with prophets, truthful ones, martyrs, and the righteous, and to bestow patience, solace, and good consolation upon his family and admirers.

On the dawn of last Friday, the death of Essam al-Attar, the Islamic preacher, thinker, and former General Supervisor of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, was announced. He passed away at the age of 97, in Aachen, Germany.

A mourning statement from his family and a message from him were published on al-Attar's Facebook page. Scholars and activists widely engaged with the announcement of his death on social media platforms.

Al-Attar was born in Damascus in 1927. His wife Banan, daughter of Sheikh Ali al-Tantawi—who was assassinated by the Syrian intelligence in Germany in 1981—was known for his supportive stance towards the Syrian revolution, according to Syrian electronic sites.
